# Residential Architects in Denver: What the 'Best Of' Lists Can't Tell You

But a house is not a photograph — **a house is a portrait of how you live**, and you're
going to live inside its decisions for decades. This page is about judging that, because
no list can.

## The program is not the house

"Four bedrooms, three baths, an office" describes a generic house. It doesn't describe
you. The floor plans we take as natural — separate living and dining, bedrooms down a
hall — are inherited, and many no longer describe the families living in them.

The one question that separates residential architects: **"which part of my program would
you push back on?"** A firm that never questions the program will deliver exactly what
you asked for, which is rarely what you need. The good ones interrogate how you actually
live — and the answers become architecture.

What that looks like built: in [our renovation in Greenwood
Village](/obra/alton-court), the custom pieces came directly from the family's daily
life. A vanity hidden inside a drawer — lift the lid and the mirror appears. A laundry
chute from the main bedroom to the laundry room. A plinth in the kids' bathroom that
pulls out as a step stool to reach the sink. None of that is in any standard program;
all of it is used every single day.

## Renovation is not the lesser project

Denver's residential stock — brick shells, solid mid-century structure, mature trees —
makes deep renovation a serious alternative to tearing down. It is also a discipline of
its own: deciding what carries value and rebuilding everything else around it.

In the Greenwood Village project, the exterior masonry walls were kept and nearly
everything else was rebuilt. New floor-to-ceiling openings and sliding glass connect the
house to the garden. The basement stopped being a basement: oversized window wells and
floor-level openings between levels pour in so much light that it reads as a ground
floor. A new south-facing window catches the low winter sun and stays shaded in summer.
Walls came out to link kitchen, dining and living, so one L-shaped sofa faces the piano,
the kitchen bar and the dining table at once.

None of those moves shows up in a "before and after" photo pair. All of them are why the
house works.

## "Custom home" means custom decisions, not just custom finishes

If you're searching *custom home architect denver*, one distinction is worth the whole
page: custom is not a level of finish, it's **who the decisions answer to**. Structure,
orientation and section are decided in design, and they're where a house gets
comfortable — and where it gets expensive. A project that resolves them well builds
better and often cheaper than one that postpones them to the contractor. The finishes you
can change in ten years; the section you can't.

## How to judge fit, instead of trusting a list

1. **Stand inside their built work.** Photos flatten exactly the things — light,
proportion, sound — that you're paying an architect to get right.
2. **Talk to a client from five years ago**, not last year. The recent one describes the
process; the older one describes how the house is aging, which is the only honest
   review.
3. **Ask who will be in the room a year in** — and who walks the site during
   construction.
4. **Ask what happens when the budget pushes back.** The answer tells you whether they
treat your house as a quantity, a surface, or a design problem.

## About the studio

Método is an architecture studio working between Mexico City and Denver since 2012. Our
residential work spans both building cultures — from housing experiments and deep
interventions in Mexico City to the Greenwood Village renovation above. See

If you have a lot, a house, or just the decision, [tell us about it](/nosotros). For the
practical side — fees, timelines, what to bring to a first call — see

## Preguntas frecuentes

### What does a residential architect actually do beyond drawings?

The drawings are the smallest part. The work is interrogating your program, deciding orientation and structure while they're still cheap to change, holding the design through permitting, and being present during construction — where the distance between a good design and a good house is actually crossed.

### Is a gut renovation worth it compared to tearing down?

Often, yes — an existing shell can hold real value in structure, in what it already does well, and in what the lot's rules let you keep. But the honest answer comes from a site visit, not a rule of thumb. Be suspicious of anyone who answers before seeing the house.

### Do you only work in Denver?

We work between Mexico City and Denver, and have since 2012. In Colorado that means residential projects in the Denver metro area; in Mexico, built work across the capital and beyond. The two building cultures inform each other — it's part of how we design.
