Handcrafted wood doors in Denver custom homes are one of the most tactile architectural elements in a residence. At MÉTODO, we design doors as part of the building's material and spatial logic — entry doors as the first spatial announcement, interior doors as the room-to-room transition, each resolved in section before fabrication.
The Door as Architectural Statement
The entry door of a custom home is the first material experience of the building. Before a visitor reads the walls, the ceiling, or the floor, they touch the door. Its weight, the quality of its hardware, the precision of its reveal against the frame — these register as quality or its absence in the first five seconds.
At MÉTODO, we design entry doors with the same rigor we apply to the facade. The door is not sourced from a product catalog. It is drawn in elevation to relate to the wall composition, the threshold material, and the canopy or overhang that protects it from Colorado weather.
Species and Material Selection for Denver Conditions
Denver's climate creates specific demands for wood door design. The wide seasonal humidity swing — from above 50 percent in summer monsoon periods to below 15 percent in dry winters — causes wood to expand and contract significantly. A solid wood door without appropriate construction strategy will rack, bind, and eventually fail.
Our species and construction approach for Denver projects:
White oak: Most dimensionally stable of the domestic hardwoods. We use it for both exterior and interior applications. The ring-porous grain takes stain and oil finishes with high consistency.
Douglas fir: Native to the region, economical for large door sizes, distinctive straight grain. We use it when the design calls for a straightforward material that connects to regional building tradition.
Mahogany (Honduran or African): Exceptional stability for exterior doors. Open grain accepts paint beautifully for painted door applications. Preferred for elaborate carved or molded profiles.
For exterior doors, we specify engineered-core construction — a stable engineered substrate with solid wood face — rather than solid stave construction, to minimize seasonal movement.
Panel Geometry and Proportion
A door's panel layout is a proportion decision as much as a construction decision. The matrix of options for any door commission includes:
- Three or four panel layout options drawn to scale against the door opening dimensions
- Evaluation of stile and rail widths relative to the door's overall scale
- Assessment of panel depth — recessed panels add shadow and depth; flush panels read as a single plane
- Review of the door's relationship to adjacent walls, transoms, and sidelights if present
The section as relato applies here too — the door's section shows how the panel depth, hardware position, and frame reveal create a shadow line composition that is only visible in the built work.
Hardware: Designed, Not Selected
The quality of a handcrafted wood door is completed by its hardware. At MÉTODO, hardware is specified in the design phase, not selected from a catalog after fabrication.
Hardware decisions include:
- Handle style and material — we work primarily with solid brass, bronze, and forged steel depending on the interior palette
- Backset and handle height calibrated to the door panel geometry and the ergonomics of the user
- Hinge count and hinge size (a 9-foot door requires three hinges at minimum; under-specified hinges are the most common cause of sagging)
- Lock integration — mortise locks for exterior applications, lever latches for interior
Hardware is ordered before fabrication so that mortises and bore holes are cut in the shop, not field-drilled.
Finish Systems for Durability
Interior wood doors receive penetrating oil or matte lacquer depending on the wood species and the interior finish schedule. Exterior doors require a more robust system:
- Two-coat exterior spar urethane or marine-grade oil finish on the door face
- End grain sealing at all four door edges — end grain is where water enters and where rot begins
- Annual inspection and touch-up recoating on weather-exposed faces
We provide a maintenance card for every exterior door project specifying the finish system used and the recommended recoat interval. This is not a detail; it is the information that protects a significant investment.
Próximos pasos
A handcrafted wood door for a Denver custom home begins with a drawing, not a product selection. If you are designing or renovating a home in Colorado and want door design that performs as architecture, we start with the opening dimensions and the wall composition.
